How do bacteria help keep ecosystems healthy?

They are natural dustmen, breaking down detritus in to it's lowest components so that they can be recycled.

How do bacteria help keep ecosystems healthy?
You would be very hard pressed to find a life system that is not dependednt in some way on bacteria. Thousands of new species were just discovered in sea water!

Bacteria help most animals digest their food, either in the stomach or abdominal area. The interactions of bacteria with plant roots help release nutrients from the soil into a form the plant can use. Bacteria keep pH stable in water. They break down decaying organic matter. They have been known to deposit minerals. They interact with corals for food absorption. Thye are the basis of the food chain in almost every ecosystem.

It is also believed that bacteria were the precursors of most intracellualr structures that process energy matabolism and DNA transcription.
